Local beverage giant Banks DIH will sponsor two events organized by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) as the Federation moves to attract new players to the sport.

President of the GCF Shiv Nandalall said Federation will run off an “Introduction to Chess” Workshop on Saturday at the Carifesta Sports Complex and the following day organize a One-Day Rapid Chess tournament for players in West Demerara. Both events will be sponsored by Banks DIH under the Banks Malta brand.

Nandalall said the “Introduction to Chess workshop” will target children between the ages 9-18 years and will start at 10:00 hours with registration scheduled to start one hour earlier.

He said this programme will be conducted by executives of the GCF and expects close to 40 players at the one-day event.

On Sunday, the Federation will run off the Banks Malta Rapid Chess at the West Demerara Secondary School starting at 10:00 hours.

Nandalall said this is the second community base programme organized by the Federation for 2011, the first being held in May in Linden.

Trophies and Chess sets will be presented to the outstanding players.

Entrance fee for senior players is $200 while junior players will receive free registration.

Banks Malta brand Manager Clayton McKenzie presented the sponsorship cheque to Nandalall during a simple ceremony at Thirst Park Tuesday.

McKenzie said that Banks DIH was pleased to be involved in the development of junior chess players and he lauded the Federation for this initiative

He said players will be provided with the nutritious product during both events.
